2:1 Allah,
the All-Knowing, the All-Wise [understands all your
needs and answers all your prayers (1:5; 2:186) in this
Book]
2:2 [This
is no ordinary book.] This is the Divine Prescript
[which has nothing but the Truth (35:31)] beyond any
doubt, [contradiction (4:82) or crookedness (39:28)] and
is free from anything that may perturb any mind or
disquiet any heart (32:2).
2:3 This
provides guidance to the mode of life of those who
preserve themselves from the perils [of this life and
the Hereafter] (2:66, 3:138, 5:46, 24:34). Those who
believe in the existence of the Unseen, that which is
beyond the reach of human perception (by the senses)
[Allah (21:49, 35:18, 36:11, 50:33, 67:12); Al-Saa’at
(16:77, 32:5-6, 34:3, 72:25-26) when every person will
get the recompense for that which he strives (20:15);
the day of resurrection (27:65-66) and the everlasting
paradise (19:61)]. Those who establish As-Salat
[remembering Allah (20:14, 62:9) all the time (70:23)
and at appointed times (4:103, 62:9), and follow His
Guidance in all the affairs] and keep the resources,
that We have bestowed upon them, open [for the welfare
of humanity]. (2:177, 9:44, 39:33, 92:17-20)
2:4 They
[realise that human intellect alone cannot find an
objective and absolute solution to all of their problems
and] believe in that [Guidance] which has been revealed
to you and in that which had been revealed before you
[to the people of the past for their guidance]; and they
are certain about [the life to come in] the Hereafter
[realising that the life of human personality {i.e. the
human software or the self} continues to evolve even
after the death of the body {i.e. the human hardware}
(57:12, 66:8)]
2:5 It is
they who (truly) follow the guidance from their Guardian
Lord and it is they to whom belongs the ultimate success
in this life and in the Hereafter (3:104, 7:8, 7:157,
9:88, 23:102, 24:51, 30:38, 31:5, 58:22, 59:9, 64:16)
2.6 As for
those who are bent upon denying these realities [because
of their envy, grudge (2:90, 2:105, 2:109), inclination
to depart from the right course (2:99), disdainful
self-exaltation and dissention (27:14, 38:2), arrogant
pride (35:42-43, 39:59, 45:31), pursuit of falsehood
(47:3), stubbornness (50:24), deceitful expediency or
opportunism (35:42-43)], it is all the same whether you
admonish them or not, they will not confess belief [,
even though the guidance has been clearly shown to them
(47:32) and they themselves have witnessed the truth
(3:70, 3:86).] [No Warner can benefit those who thus
belie the Profound Wisdom and prefer to follow their
passions or arbitrary views based upon whim and personal
opinion (54:3-5). One can only warn those who are alive
to warnings and receptive (36:70, 21:45), who would
follow the admonition and be afraid of (the consequences
of violating the commands of) the Almighty, Unseen
(36:10-11, 35:18)]
2.7 Allah
has sealed their hearts and their hearing (according to
His laws), and on their perception is a covering
[because of that they reject the truth in advance
(without any reflection), or reject the truth
intuitively or mistakenly first and then stubbornly
stick to their position, refusing to rethink their
decisions (7:101, 10:74); or believe in the truth first
and then reject it because of double-dealing (6:1-3,
4:136-137) ; or simply refuse to acknowledge the
manifest truth (4:155) and take their evil desires as
their god and follow their lusts (45:23, 47:16),
preferring the life of this world over the life of the
Hereafter (16:107-108). It is nothing but the rust of
their own deeds that has settled upon their hearts
(83:14)]. For them is a terrible retribution [There
temporal thirsts and carnal lusts will deprive them from
benefiting from the real aliment for their minds and
soul]. (6:46, 17:46,
18:57)(4:155)
2.8 And
there are people who [profess belief with the tongue
only (without the assent of the heart and testimony of
the actions); they] say that they believe in Allah and
the Hereafter but they are not faithful at all. [True
belief and conviction of the heart is much more than
just saying something with the tongue only (49:14). Only
those are truthful in their articulation of belief who
have conviction from the bottom of their heart with no
lingering doubts or disquiet in their minds and strive
diligently with their wealth and life for the cause of
Allah (49:15); they do not confound their belief with
wrong doctrines (6:82) and their conviction is
substantiated with their submission to the commands of
Allah (43:69). As for those who take their faith for
granted or believe in their own right must also
refurbish their belief according to the concepts
elucidated in the Quran (61:10-11) (4:136)]
2.9 They
(, who profess belief with the tongue only) pretend to
Allah and to the believers the contrary of what they
have in their minds; (By doing so) they deceive none but
themselves but they perceive it not.
2.10 There
mental faculties are distempered and disordered. Allah
worsened their pathological condition (according to His
Laws) and they will suffer a distressful retribution
because of the chronic conflict between what they assert
and what is deep down in their minds. (63:1) [The only
way to cure their mental disease is that they
wholeheartedly believe in the Divine Guidance and
earnestly act upon its Exhortation (10:57).]
2.11 And
when it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption or
disorder in the land [or do not make mischief and
disrupt peace, order and balance of the society and the
world]”, they say, “We are but reformers [redressing the
systems and setting things right.
2:12
Beware! It is they who are indeed the corruptors [and
disruptors of balance, peace and order of the society
and the world] but they perceive it not.
[Such
people do not give full measure and full weight; or
diminish to people their rights and deprive them of what
is their due (7:85, 11:85, 26:183); or hinder people
form the path of Allah or seek to make it crooked
(7:86); or they are not benevolent to others so as to
create an economic balance (28:77); or they destroy
crops and the cattle (2:205); or create divisions among
the people (28:4) and sever ties of kinship (47:22) an
so on.]
2:13 And
when it is said to them, “Believe (and be faithful,
trustworthy and true to the trust that is confided in
you) like other people who have become the true
believers”, they retort, “Shall we believe as the fools
have believed?” Verily, it is they who are indeed
foolish but they do not understand (their foolishness)
[because of the imprints upon their minds (9:93)
resulting from their hypocritical behaviour (63:1-3)].
2:14 And
when they meet the (truly faithful) believers, they say,
“We are faithful (believers)” but when they see their
rebellious confederates in private, they assure them of
their full support and collaboration and say, “We are
not serious (with the believers); we just make fool of
them (or make mockery of them) and deride them”.
2:15 [But
actually,] Allah makes light of them and will return
their mockery upon them [according to His Eternal Law of
Requital (6:10, 21:41, 13:32, 15:95)] and will let them
continue in their (way of) transgression (by allowing
them total freedom of action). They will keep on
wandering blindly (straying from the right course)
[unless they believe on the Guidance that Allah has
bestowed upon them and follow that Guidance (41:44,
30:53, 27:81, 6:104)].
2:16 It is
they who have preferred a perplexing maze of (trial &)
error to the most equitable Guidance (17:9) [that would
lead them through the straight path (46:30)], but
neither their bargain fetched any profit (in the long
run) nor they could become the rightly guided (from
elsewhere) (2:175, 4:44, 7:30). [They have taken
insolent and the rebellious ones as their protecting
friends instead of Allah and they deem that they are the
rightly guided (7:30) [Let them be warned that the only
perfect and true Guidance is Allah’s Guidance (2:120,
3:73, 6:71). The Most Beneficent shall give them
respite. If they fail to mend their ways they shall
surely see the promised retribution (19:75)]
2:17 Their
likeness is that of a person who sought to light up some
fire (without adequate fuel, in the dark night of a
jungle), then as soon as it brightened up his
surroundings (the fuel finished and), Allah (, according
to His Law) took away their light leaving them in the
shadows of darkness wherein they cannot see. [Likewise,
every now and then some wise men endeavour to enlighten
their dark environs by the light of their wisdom but
soon, the light of their wisdom ceases to illuminate the
world around them, leaving behind the glooms of various
sorts, sombre than ever before. [They fail to realise
that Allah is the Supreme Enlightener (24:35) and His is
the only Light that endures, and which can take them out
of every kind of darkness to a lasting illumination
(2:257, 5:15-16)]
[but]
2:18 By
turning a deaf ear and by staying dumb, visionless [,
heedless (7:179), and witless (2:171, 8:22)], they
cannot turn [to the Right Guidance, until they be
sensible (7:179, 17:36)] [Allah has made His revelations clear
so that they may turn (to His Guidance)(7:174) {, if
they will (18:29)]
2:19 Or
their likeness is that of those who are hit by a
rain-storm from the sky wherein is thick darkness,
frightening thunder and dazzling lightning. To keep
themselves from death, they thrust their fingers in
their ears against the thunderclaps. (They fail to
realise that) Allah is surrounding the disbelievers (by
His Universal Laws) from every direction (9:49, 29:54)
(and by plugging their ear holes, they cannot avoid
their doom). [Those who prefer sightlessness to the
Guidance, a thunderbolt of despicable torment will seize
them because of what they acquire (13:13,
41:13, 17, 51:44).] [When the doom will befall, it will
come from such directions which they least expect and
perceive not (7:182, 16:26, 39:25, 59:2)]
2:20 The lightning almost snatches
away their sight; whenever, it flashes, they walk a few
steps and whenever it gets darker, they stand still
[Such people lose sight of the fact that the flashes of
lightning cannot be a sure and ceaseless guide for a
traveller who is lost in the wilderness on a dark,
stormy night, where each flash of lightning is succeeded
by darkness deeper than before. Likewise, human
intellect may brighten a path momentarily but it cannot
provide an everlasting light to perpetually illuminate
the way of human life and guide the humanity from darknesses of all sorts to eternal enlightenment.]. If
Allah had willed, He would have taken away their hearing
and their sight (and deprived them even of their
intellect). But he has prescribed Laws and defined
measures for everything and He does not infringe upon
these Laws, though most surely He is All Powerful to do
anything (6/96; 10/5; 13/8; 25/2; 36/38; 41/12; 54/49;
65/3; 87/3).
[Therefore,]
2:21
O mankind! Do what your Guardian-Lord approves of [and
live in the unflickering light of His timeless Guidance]
[. It is He] who has created you and created those before
your times [. Who can guide you better than the Creator Himself?
Therefore render complete submissiveness to Him by doing
what He commands and approves of and staying away from
what He forbids and disapproves of] so that you may
[preserve yourself from the hardships
of trial and error and] guard yourself against the perils
of this life and the hereafter.
2:22 It is He who has made the earth a habitable
place for you [wherein is the means of your life
and subsistence (7:10, 32:27)]
and the atmospheric structure over it (as) a
protecting roof (21:32) [which protects you from the harmful
radiations of the sun, the meteors and the freezing cold of the space];
He has caused water to descend from the clouds
(according to His Laws) and then to bring forth with it
fruits of various sorts for your sustenance (6:99,
13:17, 14:32, 16:10, 16:65, 20:53, 22:63, 35:27, 39:21).
So knowing all this, do not take rivals of Allah
[anything that would make you stray or deviate from His
path (14:30, 39:8)]
2:23 And if there is anything that perturbs your mind or
makes you sceptical about (the truth and authenticity of) what We
have revealed to our Servant (Muhammad), then produce a
single Surah which is like this [ in magnificence
(50:1, 85:21), grandeur (15:97), wisdom (36:2),
eloquence (12:2, 39:28, 41:3, 43:3, 15:1, 36:69) and
esteem (56:77)] (11:13, 10:38, 17:88, 52:34); and call
upon your aids (who you think are the most knowledgeable
and sagacious, for your help) besides Allah, to prove
yourself true.
2:24 But if you cannot - and surely you cannot - then
guard yourself against the Inferno (of devastation), whose fuel are the
commoners and the crafty ones alike (66:6, 89:5),
readied for those who are bent upon denying and defying
(this paradisiacal code of life).
2:25 And give glad tidings to those who (accept and)
firmly believe (in this code of life) and do such deeds
which are right and just according to it, which
actualise their own potentialities as well as are
beneficial for the society and the world at large.
For them will be lush Gardens with rivulets flowing
underneath [This is just a similitude to give them an idea of the
pleasantness of their reward (13:35, 47:15)
in this world and in the Hereafter (41:30-32).
No
human being can imagine (in this life) what blissful
delights (, in real, ) are kept hidden for them in the
Hereafter as a reward for their good deeds
(32:17).] Some of the provisions in the
everlasting paradise will be of the similar sort that
they enjoyed in the ephemeral world while others
will comprise those which were explained to them before,
with examples and similitudes (only). And they shall
have therein pure (and chaste) consorts, and they shall
abide therein forever.
2:26 Indeed, Allah does not refrain from propounding a
similitude (or citing a parable) of anything as tiny as
a mosquito or anything even smaller [for the purpose of reflection
(59:21) and/or exhortation (14:25). The people of
knowledge can understand this (29:43) and]. The
believers know that this is a substantial truth,
suitable to the requirement of wisdom but those who deny
(and disbelieve such realities) say, "What could Allah
desire (to teach) by such a similitude". He thereby
causes many to go astray and many to be guided
(according to His Laws). And He does not cause anyone to
go astray except those who go forth from the bounds of
appropriateness and deviate from the right
course. [As also He leaves astray those who
do not place things in their
right place or exceed or fall short or deviate
from the right time and place (14:27); who are
exorbitant, heedless, unmindful and inordinate sceptics
(40:34); who dispute about the Ayaat of Allah, turn away
from them, belie the Divine Prescript and reject it
(40:69-74); and those who take their vain desires as
their gods (45:23)]
[Such people who go forth from the bounds of
appropriateness and deviate from the right course
are...]
2:27 Those who violate Allah's ratified Covenant [,
whereby they pledged to dedicate their lives and their
wealth for the cause of Allah in return of a
paradisiacal life (9:111, 9:75-76, 13:19-21,
16:91-92, 16:95, 6:152, 48:10)] (3:77, 7:102, 8:55-56,
13:25), and interrupt what Allah has ordained to be
attained with it,
and cause
corruption [and disruption of balance, peace and order
of the society and the world]
[Such
corruptors (and disruptors) are those who do not give full measure and full weight; or
diminish to people their rights and deprive them of what
is their due (7:85, 11:85, 26:183); or hinder people
form the path of Allah or seek to make it crooked
(7:86); or they are not benevolent to others so as to
create an economic balance (28:77); or they destroy
crops and the cattle (2:205); or create divisions among
the people (28:4) and sever ties of kinship (47:22) an
so on.]
It is they who are the
losers [in the long run (16:109)] [as are those who
reject Allah's Guidance (2:121, 7:178, 39:63) and prefer
to obey the human beings like themselves (23:34);
who indulge in futile play or vain discourse (9:69) and
believe in false deities and refuse to acknowledge Allah
(29:52)]
2:28 How can you refuse to
acknowledge Allah [when your very existence is a living
evidence of the Creator. There was a time when you were
a thing not worth mentioning (76:1)] You were lifeless
and
He it is Who gave you life [and made you worthy of being
addressed as 'you' (32:9)] Then He will cause you
to die and then bring you back to life again
whereupon unto
Him you will be made to return. (40:11,
7:25, 22:66, 26:81, 30:40, 45:26, 71:17-18) (2:281,
10:56, 32:11)
2:29 He it is Who created for you all, everything that is in or on the
earth; then He directed His design to the regions above
(the earth) and fashioned them suitably into seven
layers of the atmosphere (67:3, 71:15)(11:7, 17:44,
23:86, 41:11-12, 57:4, 65:12); He knows all about
everything, (truly and certainly).
[Now, to make you understand your position
in this Universe, Allah narrates to you, in
metaphorical terms, the story of your own
creation (i.e. the creation of Adam / man / human
beings) ]
2:30 When your Guardian-Lord made known to
Malaika that He is going to appoint on earth a
successor [of a previous creation] (15:26-29, 38:71)
(who would have supremacy on earth, and) [who could defy or infringe upon the
Divine Laws], the Malaika [,
the servants of
the Beneficent, who always obey Him with humility and
submissiveness (43:19) and never disobey Him in what He
commands them (16:49-50, 66:6)] said:
“Will you appoint on earth such (creation) as will cause
disorder therein and shed blood! - Whereas
we are always engaged in performing
the duties entrusted upon us and do our utmost to
establish your Glory
and manifest your absolute Impeccability”
He answered, “Behold, I know (completely and absolutely)
what you know not.”
[6:2,
7:189, 15:26-27, 22:5, 23:12-13, 25:54, 32:7-9, 35:11,
37:11, 71:17]
2:31
And Allah endowed man with the capacity to acquire
knowledge of all things; then He presented those things
to Malaika and asked them, "Tell me the
names of these things (i.e. the signs thereof that convey
your knowledge about them), if you (think you) are right
(in considering yourself superior to man)"
2:32
They (humbly) said, "You are far from any error or
imperfection (and your plans extend much beyond the
reach of our knowledge). We know nothing more than you
have made us to know.
Verily, You, and only You, have the complete and
absolute knowledge about everything and only You are
All-Wise to get everything done, most judiciously.
2:33 Then
He said, “O Adam! (Demonstrate to them some of your
learning ability
and)
tell them the names of these things (i.e. the signs
thereof that convey your knowledge about them).”
And when Adam (had shown them his ability to learn and)
told them the names of those things, He said to the
Malaika, “Did I not tell you that I know everything
in the Heavens and the Earth that is beyond the reach of
your cognizance? And I know truly and certainly
your manifest abilities as well as your latent
potentialities”
2:34
